When Your Child Is Afraid of the Dark
When a child feels scared, logical arguments do not always make the fear go away. Start by showing that you have heard them.
Do not shame their fear
You might say, “I can see you’re scared. I’m here with you.” This acknowledges the feeling without confirming an imagined danger.
A story as part of the evening
A fairy tale need not be a “cure for fear.” It can simply be a familiar moment between an active day and sleep.
A familiar plot may feel better
If your child is tense, a predictable story may be more comforting than a new one.
When to seek help
If the fear is intense, persists for a long time, or interferes with sleep and daily life, speak with a pediatrician or another qualified professional.
