The Battle of the Crabs and the Waves

The Battle of the Crabs

Long ago, on a warm island in the middle of the blue sea, land crabs lived a little way back from the shore. During the day, they hid from the hot sun beneath tree roots and rocks. In the evening they came out of their burrows, rustled through the sand, and talked about everything under the sun.

But they had one big complaint.

Every night, a sound came from the sea:

Shhh-rush!

Whoooosh!

Shhh-rush!

The waves were rolling onto the shore and sliding back again.

“How long will this noise go on?” one crab grumbled.

“Just when I’m nodding off, the sea goes whooosh again!” another complained.

“We must do something,” said the oldest crab. “If the waves won’t quiet down, we’ll all go to meet them and show that we’re not afraid.”

The crabs clicked their claws in agreement. It seemed like a wonderful idea. No one asked whether the sea could even be told to stop making noise.

The next morning, the whole crab crowd marched to the shore. They walked sideways, raising little clouds of sand, and cheered one another on:

“Together, we’re strong!”

“The waves will listen to us!”

“Let them try to argue!”

On the way, they met a Shrimp.

“Where are you all going so solemnly?” she asked.

“To the sea,” the crabs proudly replied. “We’re going to compete with the waves. They make noise all night and keep us awake.”

Shrimp twitched her whiskers in surprise.

“Compete with the waves? Are you sure? A wave isn’t angry or arguing. It just comes and goes. That’s the sea’s rhythm.”

The crabs did not like that answer.

“You’re just afraid!” cried a young crab.

“If you’re so clever, come along with us,” another added.

Shrimp sighed.

“All right, I’ll go. But when we get to the water, watch the sea as well as the shore.”

By the time they reached the beach, the sun was high. The sand sparkled, and the sea breathed calmly and broadly.

Shhh-rush…

Whoooosh…

The crabs lined up in front of the water.

“Shrimp, where’s your weapon?” they asked.

“Here,” she joked, pointing to her sharp little nose. “But the best weapon against the sea is paying attention.”

The crabs laughed.

“She isn’t even looking in the right direction!”

Just then, Shrimp spotted a tall wave far out at sea.

“Back!” she cried. “A big wave is coming!”

Shrimp quickly hopped higher up the sand.

But the crabs were facing inland and arguing about which of them was bravest. They did not immediately understand why Shrimp was shouting.

Whoooosh!

The wave rolled onto the beach, swept the crabs up, and tumbled them around in the foam.

“Oh!”

“My claw!”

“Which way is up?!”

“Hold on to the sand!”

In a moment, the water slipped back. One crab sat in a pile of seaweed. Another peeked out from beneath a big shell. A third had landed upside down and was waving his legs angrily in the air.

Luckily, everyone was safe.

“Quickly, move higher!” Shrimp called.

This time, no one argued. The crabs hurried to a place the water could not reach.

Back home, their families began to worry.

“They’ve been gone a long time,” one crab’s wife said.

“They’re probably arguing with the sea by now,” another replied.

Several crabs went to look for them.

As they came close to the water, another wave rolled in. But now Shrimp and the wet, much wiser crabs all shouted together:

“Wait! The wave is coming!”

Everyone ran back to the dry sand in time.

By evening, the crab community gathered beside the shore. No one talked about a battle anymore.

The oldest crab listened to the sea for a long time.

Shhh-rush…

Whoooosh…

“It seems the waves were not trying to bother us,” he finally said. “They made this sound before we came, and they will make it after we are gone.”

“We just thought the whole sea should change to suit our sleep,” added the young crab, pulling a thin strand of seaweed from his shell.

Shrimp smiled.

“You don’t always have to defeat nature’s strength. Sometimes you have to understand it.”

From then on, the crabs began watching the tides more carefully. The little crabs growing near the sea especially loved one game.

When a wave went out, they ran bravely to the wet sand:

Tap-tap-tap-tap!

When the water came back, they raced toward shore:

Rustle-rustle-rustle!

“Look! I got closer than anyone!”

“And I ran back faster!”

“Now I know: if the sea goes quiet for a moment, we have to watch even more carefully!”

And so, according to an old tale, little crabs began running toward the waves and then quickly darting back onto land.

If you ever see a tiny crab on the beach, running bravely toward the water and then hopping away again a moment later, do not be too quick to think he is afraid.

Perhaps he simply remembers an old piece of crab wisdom:

You do not have to defeat the sea.

You have to listen to it.
