The Bell
In a great city there were narrow streets, tall houses, shops, carriages, and so many voices that sometimes people could not even hear their own footsteps.
But every evening, when the Sun touched the rooftops and the sky turned golden, a strange sound rose above the city noise for one brief moment.
Bong…
Deep, clear, and far away.
“A bell!” people said. “Somewhere, an evening bell is ringing.”
But no one knew exactly where.
In the center of the city, the sound was almost immediately lost among wheels, conversations, and slamming doors. But on the outskirts, where gardens, orchards, and fields could already be seen between the houses, it was much easier to hear.
Bong…
It seemed to come from the forest.
People stopped and looked toward the dark green line of trees. For a moment, they grew quieter. Someone remembered home. Someone else thought of childhood. And some could not explain why the sound made them want to take a deeper breath.
At last, the townspeople decided to find the mysterious bell.
The wealthier ones rode to the forest in carriages, while the others went on foot. But the road turned out to be longer than anyone expected.
Old willows grew at the forest’s edge. Their long branches swayed over the grass, and the travelers decided they must have come very far.
“The bell must be somewhere around here,” they said.
Before long, a clever pastry cook set up a stall beneath the willows, selling cakes and lemonade.
“Anyone looking for the bell needs a little refreshment!” he announced.
Then another stall appeared nearby. For decoration, its owner hung a little metal bell above it.
Ding-a-ling!
“Here it is!” some visitors cheered.
But the little bell rang brightly and lightly, while the evening bell sounded quite different.
Bong…
As if it were calling from deep inside the forest.
Some people returned to the city and told everyone they had seen marvelous places. One man even wrote a long poem about the invisible bell. Another insisted that the sound came from a huge, wise owl in a hollow tree.
“It taps its beak on the trunk, and that’s the whole mystery,” he explained.
They even gave him the joking honorary title of Chief Bell Expert.
But when people asked:
“Have you seen the owl?”
He answered:
“Well… almost.”
“Have you heard it tapping?”
“Not quite.”
“Then how do you know?”
“I’ve thought about it for a very long time.”
And everyone was just as wise as before.
Time passed.
One clear day, a group of young men and women left the city after an important celebration. It was a special day: they felt a little more grown up, and the world around them suddenly seemed bigger than it had the day before.
Just then, the sound came from the forest:
Bong…
So clearly, as if the invisible bell had been waiting just for them.
“Let’s go and look for it!” someone suggested.
Almost everyone agreed.
At first, it was easy. The Sun shone through the leaves, birds called to one another above their heads, and the friends walked together, singing.
But soon the path grew narrower.
Two of the youngest got tired and turned back home. A few more stopped to weave flower crowns.
When the group reached the familiar willows and the pastry stall, someone waved a hand.
“Why go any farther? Maybe there isn’t even a bell. We’ve had a lovely walk. That’s enough.”
At that very moment, a particularly clear sound rang from deep in the forest.
Bong…
A few of the searchers kept going.
Beyond the willows lay the real forest. It smelled of moss, apple leaves, and damp earth. Anemones, blackberries, and wild grasses grew between the trees. A spring burbled somewhere nearby.
“Maybe that’s what makes the sound,” one of the young men guessed, and stayed behind to listen.
The others walked on.
Soon they saw a little hut made of branches and bark. A tiny bell hung over the door.
Ding-ding.
“We found it!” almost everyone cried.
But one young man, the king’s son, shook his head.
“No. This sound is lovely, but it isn’t the one. The great bell can be heard from far away, and it makes the whole forest seem more spacious.”
“You always have to look for something more complicated,” his friends laughed.
They stayed by the hut, and the young man went on alone.
The deeper he went into the forest, the less he could hear the city. The rumble of wheels disappeared. The human voices faded. Even the little bell’s ringing melted away behind him.
Only now and then did he hear:
Bong…
It seemed to come from somewhere to the left, from the place where his heart was beating.
Suddenly, something rustled in the bushes, and another young man stepped onto the path. The prince recognized him at once. It was the same boy from their group who had not been able to go with the others at first.
For the celebration, he had borrowed fine clothes and shoes. Afterward, he had to return them to their owner. So the boy had hurried back to the city, changed into his own simple jacket, put on his wooden shoes, and only then set off for the forest.
“You came after all!” the king’s son said happily. “Let’s go together.”
The boy looked at his simple clothes, then at the prince’s fine coat, and felt a little shy.
“I think I’ll take my own path,” he said. “The sound seems to be leading to the right.”
“And to me it seems to be leading left,” the prince replied.
They wished each other good luck and went separate ways.
The king’s son kept walking. The forest grew more and more wonderful. Deer grazed in the clearings. White swans floated on quiet ponds. Sunbeams slipped through the leaves, and drops of water on the grass shone like tiny pieces of glass.
Several times the young man thought:
“Here! The bell must be close by!”
But the sound rang out farther away again.
At last, the Sun began to set.
“I haven’t found the bell,” the prince said quietly. “But I’d at least like to see the sunset from somewhere high.”
He climbed a great rocky hill.
And stopped in wonder.
Beyond the forest lay the sea.
Vast. Silvery-blue. Stretching all the way to the sky. The Sun was sinking toward the horizon, and the water caught its golden and red reflections.
The wind moved through the treetops.
Shhhhh…
Waves rolled toward the shore.
Whoooosh…
Birds called their last evening greetings.
And suddenly, all those sounds seemed to join together.
Bong…
The young man smiled.
There was no bell tower, no rope, and no great metal bell before him.
But the sound was there.
Not in one place—everywhere.
In the wind.
In the sea.
In the evening sky.
In the silence between two waves.
Then, on the hill across from him, another figure appeared: the boy in wooden shoes.
He had made it, too.
By his own path.
The two young men looked at each other in surprise, then laughed.
“Did you hear it?” the king’s son asked.
“I did,” the boy replied.
“Did you find it?”
The boy looked at the sea, the forest, and the first stars.
“I think so. But it isn’t quite the kind of bell you can hang in a tower.”
They stood side by side.
One wore fine clothes, the other a simple jacket and wooden shoes. But up on the hill, none of that mattered. There was one sea before them, one sky above them, and both heard the same sound.
Bong…
Darkness slowly settled over the trees. One by one, stars appeared above the sea.
And the young men understood one more thing.
Sometimes everyone looks for a wonder in the very same place: by the first willow, beside the pastry stall, beneath a little bell, or in someone else’s explanation.
But a true search begins when you are brave enough to go a little farther and listen for yourself.
The next day, they returned to the city.
“So where is the bell hanging?” people immediately asked.
The two young men looked at each other.
“If we tell you, you won’t believe us,” they replied.
“Show us the way!”
“Everyone may have their own path.”
And they explained nothing more.
That evening, the city was noisy again with voices and wheels.
The Sun sank behind the rooftops.
And for one brief moment, the same distant sound rang out above all the noise:
Bong…
Someone did not notice.
Someone was in a hurry.
And someone stopped, lifted their head, and listened.
May this story leave a little light in your heart ✨
