The Fox and the Tiger

One warm day, a tiger was walking along a forest path. He moved slowly and heavily, and dry leaves crunched softly beneath his paws.

All the forest animals knew the tiger well. Whenever they spotted him in the distance, they hurried to hide in burrows, bushes, or high up in trees.

Suddenly, the tiger saw a fox right in the middle of the path.

The fox saw him too. Her heart gave a frightened thump.

“Well, this is quite a meeting,” she thought. “It’s too late to run. I’ll have to think of something.”

The tiger came closer and asked in a fierce voice, “Why aren’t you running away from me, Fox?”

The fox stood tall, lifted her tail, and answered as confidently as if she had been waiting for that question all morning.

“Why should I run?”

The tiger was surprised. “Because I’m a tiger! The whole forest is afraid of me.”

The fox shook her head solemnly. “You must have missed the news. Heaven has chosen me to rule over all the animals.”

The tiger sat down in astonishment. “You? The ruler?”

“Me,” said the fox. “Now everyone runs away as soon as they see me.”

The tiger narrowed his eyes. “I don’t believe you.”

“Then see for yourself,” said the fox. “Let’s walk to the edge of the forest. I’ll go first, and you can follow a little way behind. You’ll see it with your own eyes.”

The tiger thought, “If she’s bragging, I’ll soon find out.”

“All right,” he said.

The fox walked ahead slowly and proudly, holding her tail high. The tiger followed behind her.

Before long, they reached a path where a few villagers were returning home from the fields. The people saw the fox. Then they saw the enormous tiger right behind her.

“TIGER!” someone shouted.

Everyone rushed off the road and hid behind fences and trees.

The fox didn’t even look back. “Did you see?” she asked calmly.

The tiger blinked in surprise. “I did.”

They continued on. A few children were playing by a stream. As soon as they noticed the tiger behind the fox, they ran straight home.

The fox asked again, “Did you see?”

“I did,” the tiger replied, even more quietly.

Beyond the hill, some goats were grazing. The shepherd looked toward the road, spotted the tiger, and quickly led the herd away.

The fox stopped. “Well, do you believe me now?”

The tiger looked at her with great respect. “I do. I had no idea you were so important.”

“There’s a lot one can fail to notice in the forest,” the fox said wisely.

The tiger politely stepped aside. “Go on your way, Lady Fox. I won’t keep you any longer.”

“Have a good day,” she replied.

The fox continued proudly along the path. She didn’t hurry until the tiger disappeared around a bend.

Then she darted into the bushes, sat beneath an old oak, and finally let out a long breath.

“Whew! What a walk!”

She knew very well that the people had not run from her. They had seen the tiger following behind.

But the tiger never understood that.

From then on, the forest animals told the story of how a little fox had won the day with cleverness instead of strength.

And the tale has another reminder: sometimes we see only part of what is happening and jump to the wrong conclusion. It’s wise to look carefully before deciding what to believe.
