The Magic Peach
Far beyond the seas, according to an old tale, lay the Isle of Gems. There stood the palace of the Heavenly Queen Mother, Su Wang Mu.
The palace roofs glittered in the sun, lotuses bloomed beside the ponds, and blue doves circled above the gardens. Celestial chariots drawn by dragons were sent to bring honored guests to the island.
But the greatest miracle was the peach orchard.
The peaches ripened only rarely. People said that anyone who received one from the Queen Mother herself would be granted an extraordinarily long life.
One day, Su Wang Mu heard of a young prince who was respected by the people for his kindness and intelligence. She invited him to a feast at her palace.
A golden chariot came to collect the prince. Its dragons carried it easily above the mountains and clouds, until the Isle of Gems shone ahead.
The prince was greeted with music. In the great hall there were tables with fruit, fragrant tea and dishes that he had never seen before.
When all the guests were seated, the Queen Mother brought out several ripe peaches on a golden tray.
“Today the garden has given us rare fruits,” she said. “Let them remind us that a long life is worth living only when it is filled with good deeds.”
She handed one peach to the prince.
He took a bite. The fruit was sweet and smelled of summer. For a moment it seemed to the prince that the whole world around him had become brighter: the music was clearer, the colors deeper, and the wind from the garden cooler.
A young woman who had been helping at the feast stood nearby, watching the unusual fruit.
The prince smiled.
“Do you want to taste some?”
Forgetting the palace rules, he took another peach from the tray and gently tossed it to her.
The girl caught it.
For a moment, the hall fell silent.
“Only the Queen Mother may give out these fruits,” an attendant said softly.
The prince realized that he had acted recklessly.
“It’s my fault,” he said. “I didn’t mean to break the custom.”
But the girl had already bitten into the peach.
At that moment, a golden mist came from the garden. It swirled around the columns, hiding the tables, the guests, and even the palace itself.
When the mist cleared, everything changed.
Here, the old tale turns many pages of time at once.
Years passed. Then decades. Then centuries.
In the high mountains known as the Ever-White Mountains lived a hermit with a long silver beard. He had traveled far, learned to listen to silence, and watched the sky. By now, he had almost forgotten palaces and royal feasts.
One morning he saw a traveler on the path.
She looked young, but her eyes held the calm of someone who had seen hundreds of springs.
“Are you lost?” asked the hermit.
“No,” she answered. “I have been looking for someone for a very long time.”
They sat down by a mountain spring.
The traveler told a strange story.
Long ago, she had lived on the Isle of Gems and attended a feast held by the Heavenly Queen Mother. A young prince had tossed her a magical peach. After she tasted it, her life had become extraordinarily long.
Since then, she had traveled widely. She had seen cities rise and disappear, roads change, and young trees grow immense. Through it all, she had remembered the young man who shared the peach with her.
The hermit listened carefully.
“And what did that prince look like?” he finally asked.
She described his voice, his clothes, and a little mark on his hand.
The hermit slowly held out his hand.
It had the same mark on it.
“It was me,” he said.
The traveler froze.
“But… so much time has passed.”
“I tasted the magical peach too,” he replied. “I was given a long life. But over the years, I began to think that meeting had only been a dream.”
They gazed at each other, then both began to laugh with the joy of meeting again after such a long journey. A thousand years had passed, and here they were at last.
They say that at that moment the hermit’s gray hair shone with silver, his back straightened, and his eyes regained their youthful sparkle. The magical peach seemed to remind him of who he once was.
Suddenly, great wings rustled above the mountains.
A golden dragon descended from the clouds. A celestial chariot floated behind it.
Queen Mother Su Wang Mu had learned that her two guests from long ago had found each other. She invited them back to the Isle of Gems.
When they arrived, the peach orchard was in full bloom.
“You have both traveled a very long way,” said the Queen Mother. “Now you must choose for yourselves where to go next.”
The prince and the traveler looked at each other.
They already knew that they wanted to stay together.
That evening, a feast was held on the island. Blue doves circled over the gardens, dragons dozed near golden chariots, and small lanterns glowed in the peach branches.
From then on, the old tale says, the two travelers cherished a simple truth: even the longest journey gains meaning through the people we meet along the way.
