The Sun, Moon, and Wind Go Out to Dinner

Long ago, the Sun, the Moon, and the Wind were young and lived together with their mother, the Star.

The Sun loved everything bright and hot.

The Moon loved quiet evenings, silver light, and peaceful conversations.

The Wind could never sit still. One moment he rustled leaves, the next he spun dust along the road, and then he raced toward the horizon without even knowing why.

One day an invitation arrived.

Thunder and Lightning were giving a grand dinner.

“What a celebration!” cried the Sun.

“There will probably be music,” said the Moon.

“I’ll get there first!” shouted the Wind, immediately whirling around the house.

The Star straightened their festive clothes.

“Go and enjoy yourselves. I’ll stay home. Just remember: when you are having a wonderful time, it is kind to remember the person waiting for you.”

“Of course!” the three answered together.

And off they went.

Thunder and Lightning’s dinner was noisy and cheerful.

The great table held fragrant flatbreads, spiced rice, sweet fruit, nuts, and pitchers of cool drinks.

The Sun sat close to the table.

“I’ll try this! And this! And that too!”

The Wind flew from plate to plate.

“What a smell! What’s over there? May I taste that? Just a little more?”

Only the Moon remembered their mother from time to time.

When sweet fruit was served, he put several of the best pieces into a small clean cloth.

When the nuts arrived, he added some of those.

Then he asked the hosts for a little flatbread for the Star.

“It’s for Mother,” he explained. “She stayed at home.”

Thunder smiled.

“It is good when someone at a celebration remembers those who are not at the table.”

Late that evening, the Sun, Moon, and Wind returned home.

The Star was waiting by the window.

“How was the dinner?” she asked.

“Wonderful!” cried the Sun. “I ate so many delicious things!”

“And I tasted everything I could reach!” boasted the Wind.

The Star gently asked:

“Did you remember me?”

The Sun fell silent.

The Wind stopped whistling.

They looked at one another.

“We were... very busy eating,” the Sun finally said.

“And talking,” added the Wind.

Then the Moon brought out the little cloth.

“I brought you some treats.”

He unfolded it, revealing a flatbread, nuts, and sweet fruit.

The Star was pleased not so much by the food as by the fact that the Moon had remembered her.

“Thank you,” she said. “The most precious thing here is not the food. It is that, in the middle of all the fun, you remembered someone waiting at home.”

The Sun felt a little ashamed.

“Next time I’ll bring you something delicious too.”

“So will I!” rushed the Wind. “I can carry it faster than anyone!”

The Star laughed.

“I believe you. And tonight each of you will remember this evening in a different way.”

She looked at the Sun.

“You are bright and strong. Sometimes your warmth will be so hot that people will search for shade. Let that remind you that strength is better when used with care.”

Then she turned to the Wind.

“You are swift and restless. Sometimes you will race so hard that trees will roar and doors will bang. Let that remind you to stop now and then and notice others.”

And to the Moon, the Star said:

“You remembered me. So let your light be cool and gentle. When night comes, people will look at you and feel calm.”

From then on, the Sun shone bright and hot. The Wind traveled the world, sometimes gentle and sometimes strong. And the Moon glowed quietly at night.

And they say that when the Moon is especially clear, the Star is looking at him and remembering that long-ago dinner when all three learned a simple truth: joy grows larger when you remember to share it with others.
