Why the Sky Is Curved
If you step outside in the evening, lift your head, and look far above you, the sky seems like an enormous blue or star-filled dome. It stretches over cities, seas, forests, and mountains like a gigantic roof without visible supports. But why does it seem curved instead of flat? An old Filipino tale answered the question this way. Very long ago, the sky was different. It lay lower and flatter, almost like an enormous blue ceiling. Above it was a bright heavenly home where everything was peaceful and spacious. Years passed, and more and more shining guests arrived there. At first, there was plenty of room. “Come in,” said the angels. “There is space for everyone.” Some guests sat beside silver clouds. Others gathered near starry gardens. Still others came to listen to heavenly music. But the crowds continued growing. Soon someone said, “Move over a little.” Then another said, “Just a little more.” At last everyone had to squeeze closer together. The heavenly home became so crowded that the sky itself began to sag. At first, almost no one noticed. Then it sank a little farther. One day a strange sound echoed above. Crrrreak... As if an old board had cracked somewhere very far away. The Ruler of Heaven looked up. “What was that?” The angels listened. Crrrreak... “The sky is sagging!” one cried. And indeed, the great heavenly ceiling had dropped lower than it should. If no one supported it, it might be damaged even more. So the Ruler of Heaven called five angels. The first was swift. The second was strong. The third was patient. The fourth could stand still for an entire day. The fifth was the tallest of all. “Go down to the earth,” the ruler said. “Stand in different places and hold up the sky while the builders repair it.” The five angels descended. “I will stand here,” said the first. “And I here,” said the second. “I will support this edge,” said the third. “I will take the opposite side,” said the fourth. The tallest angel looked around. The center had no support. “Then my place is in the middle.” They straightened, raised their hands, and carefully held up the sky. “Ready?” asked the tallest. “Ready!” “Then together!” Above them, heavenly builders hurried to work. They brought golden hammers, silver braces, long light ladders, and coils of thread as thin as sunrise. Tap, tap. Chime, chime. Rustle, rustle. They strengthened weak places, repaired the edges, and mended every tiny crack. There was much to do. The five angels below did not move. After a long time one of the builders called, “How are you doing?” “Holding!” answered four voices. The tallest angel only smiled. Because he was taller than the others, his head lifted the middle of the sky higher than the edges. At last the repairs were complete. “You can let go now,” the builders announced. The angels lowered their hands very carefully and stepped away. Everyone looked up. The sky was strong. The cracks were gone. But it was no longer flat. In the middle, where the tallest angel had stood, it rose highest. Toward the edges, it remained lower. A great curve had formed. “Should we flatten it?” one builder asked. The Ruler of Heaven considered the new shape and shook his head. “No. This is better. Now there is more room.” And so, says the old tale, a high curved dome has stretched over the earth ever since. When stars seem scattered across its great rounded ceiling at night, you can imagine five angels standing below long ago, holding the sky together while the tallest took the middle and accidentally gave it the shape we see today.
